From history immemorial to the modern day traditions, Valentine’s Day has evolved a lot over the years. It is a day when people around the whole world are free to show their affection to another person by sending gifts like chocolates, flowers, and cards with love messages. Another popular traditional belief is that when Valentine's Day falls in a leap year, women can propose to their desired partner.
But while indulging in the season of romance, most of us don’t even bother to care about the origin of Valentine’s Day. Do you know from where these traditions came from and how the day got its name?
The day actually got its name from a priest called St. Valentine, and there was heart throbbing mythical stories about him. Some stories say that St. Valentine lived in Rome in the 3rd century AD where Emperor Claudius ruled. The Emperor had banned marriage for soldiers, as he believed that they would do their job better if they were single. Men had no permission to marry, and violators got severe punishments.
St. Valentine found this to be unjust, and he started helping couples to get married without the ruler’s knowledge. At last, when Claudius came to know about this, he put the priest in jail, and he was put to death. Other stories claim that while, in jail, he fell in love with the jailor's daughter and has sent her a letter signed in his name as “from your Valentine". These stories prompt us to believe that this is how Valentine's Day came into practice and lovers got the name "Valentine".
